She was more lonely than the caravan crossing the desert; she was infinitely more mysterious, moving by her own power and sustained by her own resources. The sea might give her death or some unexampled joy, and none would know of it. — Virginia Woolf, The Voyage Out (via wuthering-soul)

I don’t know. I just feel stuck, like I’m afraid to take any steps in case they’re the wrong ones. — Rebecca Stead, When You Reach Me (via xuf)

These days, it seems that if I were nothing but a motionless statue you passed in the street, you would take no notice of me as you are now so familiar to the face you used to adore when I was first carved into your city. — Now I’m nothing but a statue (via disaffecting)

HERE’S JUST HOW MUCH IT PAYS TO BE CONVENTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE

We’ve come to expect impossible, even improbable standards of beauty to populate our magazines and our television shows. It’s another thing entirely to find they’ve invaded our workplace.

Watch Vox’s full video to see the many other ways these unrealistic beauty standards effect where we work.

Holy schnikes.

Now add Black to it,

And think about how white people are the ones in the hiring positions,

And white people never look at us or interact with us for longer than they absolutely HAVE to,

So most of us are automatically marked ‘unattractive’ simply because we’re Black,

Aaaaaand you end up with a Black unemployment rate that’s over DOUBLE that of the rest of the country,

EVEN DURING TIMES OF ECONOMIC PROSPERITY.
